Regulated Crypto

Investing in crypto assets is not for the risk-averse. Fortunately, the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) has authorized a half dozen platforms for those seeking to invest in crypto assets on exchanges with some regulatory oversight. In 2021, the following were registered with the OSC: WealthSimple Trade, Coinberry, Netcoins, Coinsmart, Fidelity, and Bitbuy. These may not be the best platforms for investing in crypto, but at least they have taken the steps (often over a number of years) to obtain registration with the OSC.

A Second Pure Bitcoin Security

I just bought some CXBTC, an indirect investment in Bitcoin, trading in a regulated market (Sweden). My rationale, Grayscale’s competing security GBTC has been trading at a ridiculous 50 to 60% premium to the underlying value of Bitcoin. This premium may be reflective of the difficulty investors have in speculating on the value of Bitcoin in regulated markets. Hopefully, CXBTC will attract some premium until additional similar securities begin to proliferate and premiums dwindle.
